Freedom Assembly of God History

July 5, 1981, the doors were opened at Throwers old store building on Hwy. 710 south of Red Springs, NC for Sunday School and Worship morning and night. After several weeks the congregation met to decide on a name. There were several names given, First Assembly, Freedom Assembly of God and others. Finally, Jim (Charles Hardin) spoke up and said, “let's go with Freedom Assembly of God.” The others decided that would be the name. The church began to grow very rapidly. They started looking for property to build a permanent facility for our church. When it looked as if things were not opening up, God gave the church a miracle. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hardin donated land.

Pretty soon the church had a groundbreaking. The men began to build, and the ladies, as well as some men, began raising funds. Bro. and Sis. Albert Gibbs, Bro. Ralph and Sis. Edna McCormick, the C. Hadden’s and lots of others helped with plate sales regularly.

July 25, 1982, the congregation walked or rode from the Throwers building to the newly completed Freedom Assembly of God on Old Maxton Road. This was our first service in this facility. Attendance was 370. Pastor Montana Locklear’s scripture was Ex. 40:30. One man came to the altar for salvation. Dinner was served at the old building, which we used as a Fellowship Hall for a while. Lots of people, plenty of food.

Sunday Afternoon-Special Singing Service-Attendance 626+. Revival for two weeks. Revival speakers were Rev. Jerry Groves, Rev. Melvin Bell, Rev. James Hunt, Rev. Wade Locklear, Rev. Donald Locklear and Pastor Montana Locklear. Thirty saved, two filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. The Lord blessed financially as the people obeyed God by giving tithes and offerings.
